About

Rotherham Symphony Orchestra

History

Established in 2017.

The RSO is a local orchestra based in the South Yorkshire town of Rotherham and its membership consists of amateurs, professionals, teachers, and students. Not everyone has music as their background, primary job or study and for many of the orchestras members this is simply a hobby. There are some members who are retired from work, HR managers, teachers of many subjects, ecologists, assistant head teachers, sales people & students to name a few.

The orchestra was established in 2017 as part of the Rotherham Music Hub and performed its first concert ‘Proms in the Park’ in Rotherham's Clifton Park in September of that year as one of the main events of the Rotherham Show weekend. After a few years the orchestra ceased to be part of the Rotherham Music Hub becoming it's own entity when we felt it was fully established.

Following the Covid pandemic the orchestra has revitalised and is now going from strength to strength and has since performed several concerts in a variety of prestigious venues such as Wentworth Woodhouse, Rotherham Civic Theatre as well as performing numerous concerts in the towns Minster. More recently the orchestra is developing wider relationships across the borough with a view to performing in new settings.

The orchestra rehearses once a month on a Sunday (2-5pm) usually the third Sunday of each month. (However, this can change depending on bank holiday weekends or concert dates etc.)

Jack Capstaff was appointed as the new Musical Director for RSO in the Summer of 2023.
