Meet the Orchestra

Below is a bit of information about just a few of our current members.

For the profiles below a set of questions were given to each person and their answers have been formulated into their own profile.

Emily Wraw - Trumpet

If you have one, what is your nickname? - Em

Aside from playing in the orchestra, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? - Playing cornet for Old Silkstone Brass Band, crafting (mostly crochet) and outdoor swimming 

What do you do for a living (job / student / retired)? - Head of Equality and Diversity in an NHS Trust 

If you could be a fruit, any fruit; what would you be and why? - A pineapple - surprisingly soft on the inside once you get through the prickly exterior 

What is your favourite food? - Cheese - the smellier the better! 

What two luxury items would you take to a deserted island? - My trumpet (good opportunity to practice without annoying the neighbours!) and a crochet hook, in the hope I could make a sort of yarn out of palm leaves and crochet myself a raft 

How long have you been in the orchestra? - 3-4 years 

Which famous musicians do you admire and why? - David Bowie, for showing you could be whoever you wanted to be. And Wynton Marsalis for being an amazing trumpet player. 

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? - What you're playing will sound far worse to you than it will to any non-musician who's listening 

What music would you like us to perform in our future concerts and why? - Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition - it's beautiful 

Ian Atkinson - Percussion

If you have one, what is your nickname? - Arfur or Arfurjob (Half a Job) (It's a long story!)

Aside from playing in the orchestra, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? - I enjoy playing music as much as I can. I currently play BBb Bass (Tuba) in a Brass band and percussion in a wind orchestra as well as percussion with RSO. I also enjoy dabbling in music recording end editing. Enjoy time with family and friends.

What do you do for a living (job / student / retired)? - I work at Rotherham Town Hall in the Civic Office as a Civic Officer. My duties range quite literally from pot washer to meeting arranger to tour guide to security officer to technician to mayors chauffeur and Mace Bearer plus anything in between.

If you could be a fruit, any fruit; what would you be and why? - An Apple - It can be very versatile. It can be used for Juice, making sauce, filling in a pie, eaten 'raw' and many other options.

What is your favourite food? - No one real favourite but I like a good carvery, curries, Italian, Chinese, Mexican. 

What two luxury items would you take to a deserted island? - Something to listen to music on. Either a good book or puzzles to keep my brain active. 

How long have you been in the orchestra? - Almost 3 years 

Which famous musicians do you admire and why? - Edward Elgar - He wrote his Enigma variations and to this day nobody has uncovered the rumoured hidden theme.

William Himes - A Salvation Army composer / arranger who has written music of different styles some of which are my favourite brass band pieces.

Eric Ball - Wrote a lot for brass bands and again some of the best writing for brass bands.

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? - Relax. Remember, everyone around you was once a beginner like you. Mistakes are something we can use to help us learn and improve. There isn't a live performance of anything that doesn't have a single mistake in it.  

What music would you like us to perform in our future concerts and why? - Some of the great film themes / items from stage musicals that everybody knows and loves. 

Martin Lightowler - Oboe

Aside from playing in the orchestra, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? - Reading great literature 

What do you do for a living (job / student / retired)? - Retired music teacher 

What is your favourite food? - Cake. 

What two luxury items would you take to a deserted island? - Complete works of Shakespeare and my ipod (with the wherewithal to play it for my time there) 

How long have you been in the orchestra? - Since the orchestra was founded. 

Which famous musicians do you admire and why? - Bach. He's the greatest.

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? - Work hard, commit yourself and listen to great music being performed by great musicians - so you know where you're going 

What music would you like us to perform in our future concerts and why? - Vaughan Williams symphonies 5 & 6. Two wonderful pieces which I've never performed 

Chris Thorp - Bassoon

If you have one, what is your nickname?

Aside from playing in the orchestra, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? - Walking Finbar the Westie and model railways. 

What do you do for a living (job / student / retired)? - I’m still living a life of music making but no longer getting paid for it! 

If you could be a fruit, any fruit; what would you be and why? - A peach cos everyone likes peaches. 

What is your favourite food? - Curry. 

What two luxury items would you take to a deserted island? - My camper van and a robot servant. 

How long have you been in the orchestra? - Since the orchestra was founded. 

Which famous musicians do you admire and why?

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? - I still get nervous but hide it quite well.  

What music would you like us to perform in our future concerts and why? - Rimsky-Korsakov Scherazade.  Because it has a bassoon part to die for.  

Jenni Newton-Smith - Violin

If you have one, what is your nickname?

Aside from playing in the orchestra, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? - Perform on the stage with CAOS (amateur operatic group) - singing, tapping and acting.  part of a Sheffield string quartet, play the piano and enjoy running! Take part in the weekly ‘Parkrun’ and trying to achieve her best PB.  

What do you do for a living (job / student / retired)? - Assistant Head Teacher in Rotherham 

If you could be a fruit, any fruit; what would you be and why? - Hmmmm… I’d be a passion fruit. Sometimes sweet, sometimes sharp!  

What is your favourite food? - Anything Italian! 

What two luxury items would you take to a deserted island? - A good facial moisturiser and a hair mask! 

How long have you been in the orchestra? - Less than a year. 

Which famous musicians do you admire and why? - Lindsey Stirling - electric violinist and Tim Abel - virtuoso pianist . Both transform pieces from the past and make them come to life in the present day with such enthusiasm, and flawed technique 

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? - Play your heart out - no one will hear or notice your mistakes if you play it with conviction! 

What music would you like us to perform in our future concerts and why? - Elgar and Beethoven - great to play, equal opportunities for members of our current orchestra, familiar to all and easy listening. 

Wendy Atkinson - Trumpet

If you have one, what is your nickname? - Woo

Aside from playing in the orchestra, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? - I play in a local brass band and as part of this I arrange / compose music for the band to play. I like to spend time with my family and I write a blog for educators that has been read all around the world. 

What do you do for a living (job / student / retired)? - Maths Teacher and Quality of Education Lead in a large Senior School. 

If you could be a fruit, any fruit; what would you be and why? - I would be a passionfruit. This is a hardy fruit that grows well in higher altitudes. Similarly, I thrive under pressure, can take criticism and am also very passionate about what I do 

What is your favourite food? - Chocolate! 

What two luxury items would you take to a deserted island? - An endless supply of wet wipes (I like to feel clean) and a stationary set - so that I could write / draw to my hearts content 

How long have you been in the orchestra? - Since the orchestra was founded. 

Which famous musicians do you admire and why? - How do you name just a few?   I have quite an eclectic taste in music from brass bands and orchestras to country music, pop and rock... there are so many I could be here all night! 

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? - Take a deep breath and try your best, we're all here to make music, to enjoy it and to learn. While you're playing - make sure you try to make the best sound that you possibly can 

What music would you like us to perform in our future concerts and why? - I'd like to attempt the Aritunian Trumpet Concerto, other than that maybe Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite no.2. If we were to do a kids concert - maybe Britten's Guide to the orchestra. We could do a theme event such as Disney or romantic music 

Ian Beever - Double Bass

If you have one, what is your nickname? - Beev

Aside from playing in the orchestra, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? - Cycling

What do you do for a living (job / student / retired)? - Part Time Engineer. 

If you could be a fruit, any fruit; what would you be and why? - A Strawberry as may get an invite to Wimbledon

What is your favourite food? - Mackerel. 

What two luxury items would you take to a deserted island? - Water and an Umbrella

How long have you been in the orchestra? - Since the orchestra was founded. 

Which famous musicians do you admire and why? - Earl Hines. The relaxed jazz style makes you want to pick up a bass and join in.

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? - Start with the conductor, finish with the conductor, and don’t worry about what goes on in the middle.  

What music would you like us to perform in our future concerts and why? - Carnival of the animals as there is an important part for the double bass
